About Kere Alang

Hasanuddin, S.Pd. (Deputy Head of Pajatu Adat – Tana Samawa Customary Institution) and Ms. Husnulyati, S.Pd. (*Kere Alang* artisan from Poto Village)—focuses on preserving Kere Alang fabric, an intangible cultural heritage unique to Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara. UNESCO’s recognition of batik as world cultural heritage underscores the importance of preserving local culture, which serves as a national identity. As a traditional Sumbawa woven fabric, Kere Alang embodies philosophical, historical, and cultural values ​​passed down through generations via the weaving process known as Nesek. However, the existence of Kere Alang currently faces various challenges, such as declining public interest due to modern fashion trends, competition from cheaper and mass-produced textiles, and a reduction in the number of weaving businesses due to economic constraints.

To address these issues, this research developed an Android-based application named the "Kere Alang Sumbawa Application" to serve as a digital medium for cultural preservation. The application's development began with a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) involving weavers, creative economy practitioners, and local curriculum teachers to gather information regarding the history, motifs, meanings, and sales locations of Kere Alang. This information is presented in both Indonesian and English to ensure accessibility for the general public, including international tourists. Thus, the application is expected to serve as an effective educational and promotional tool to support the preservation of Kere Alang in the digital era.
